Learn and Understand the Basic Tools for Common Problems Related to Mental Health
We’re all familiar with physical first aid: when someone falls down or chokes on their food or makes a cut on their hand – we know exactly what to do and how to treat the situation.
But what do you do if you see someone is having a panic attack? some would think it’s best to rush to this person’s rescue – even though crowding the person may make it worse. And what do you do if someone is crying? Our first impulse may be to hug this person – but what if this person is uncomfortable being hugged? Or When you’re done with an exam and you’re genuinely curious to see if you wrote the correct answers so you ask your peers about it but unintentionally, you’ve made them anxious.
For some, what’s missing from these situations is the role of ‘Emotional First Aid,’ which is what Alister Tieng of Relate Counseling is here to instruct you on. Alister believes that emotional first aid is for all – not just counselors, psychologists or doctors as everyone should learn to be first responders to their friends, family members and siblings that are struggling to handle themselves emotionally. With this class, you will learn the do’s and don'ts of providing emotional first aid to those around you.
‘Emotional First Aid’ will provide you with the basic tools to handle situations relating to stress, anxiety/panic attacks, depression etc. It will also deal with the topic of confidentiality and how we cannot promise confidentiality as it may not be safe to do so.
